I live in Portland, OR and on weekend mornings my husband and I marvel at the jungle sound we hear and have made a few half-hearted attempts to figure out what it was — to no avail (I found that online searches for birdsong are akin to a needle in a haystack for a novice.) Today we know! THANK YOU. For both this and for sharing your refreshing newsletter and beautiful artwork. I need more of this in my life.
Ahhh, amazing! Isn't it the craziest sound ever? You would never imagine it came from a giant woodpecker. I am so happy I could help, and thank you for your kind words, too! I love that you can hear the same thing in Oregon that I hear in Connecticut.
I was camping in Killbear Provincial Park in Ontario about five years ago, and I woke up to the sound of a woodpecker. When I exited my tent I was delighted to see that it was a pileated woodpecker knocking on a tall pine. I watched it for a bit and realized that there were two, and they moved around the tree until they were on either side of the trunk at the same height! It looked almost like a cuckoo clock!
"Any day with a pileated woodpecker is a good day. " - YES! I love hearing their loud call echo through the early morning trees. I was just saying I haven't seen any for way too long, having been moved away from one of the trails I walked last year because it was inundated with people. A number of years ago I had the great good fortune to stumble into the coming out party for 2 fledglings. Omg, giant baby woodpeckers are definitely one of the coolest things I've ever experienced! Beautiful writing, beautiful artwork. Thank you.
I don’t know that I’ve seen a pileated woodpecker in my yard, but I often see them in my parents. They are really beautiful and fascinating to watch. On another note: I recently discovered I had a family of gray foxes living under my deck. They since moved on, but for 2 or 3 weeks my life revolved around learning and watching them from my window. Fun fact: they can climb trees, which I got to see firsthand!
Glad to hear about the pileateds, but also the gray foxes! Do they know they are safe under our houses? It's so interesting to me when animals choose to live so close. I've never seen a gray fox in person, but I have watched a video of one climbing a tree -- an unexpected and excellent talent.
I think it’s interesting too when they choose to live nearby. It’s a nice reminder we really do share this world with them—and for that I’m grateful! :)

Oh wow that is so cool, such a funny picture in my head -- amazing that you saw this pileated clock in person! Happy canoeing this summer, Grace :)
