Not unlike Tufted Ducks, which I am more familiar with here in the UK

They are really pretty ducks, and every once in a while I actually get to see that purple ring on their neck!

We get mallards around town here (in Canada! lol) a lot. One of the neater things is sometimes those ducks seem to stay over the winter, or at least return very early. I recall seeing them on small creeks - which run quickly = they don't thoroughly freeze over (vs. a pond) - even when there was much ice and snow around, just enjoying the patches of water they can find. Their downy feathers and duck blubber must be good at keeping them warm out there!

My favorite are the spring mallards and their ducklings skittering about on the water. You're right, their feather coats must be amazing -- I've been wondering about their feet in the cold water (wish mine would stay so warm).

Beautiful! The Canadians who will see these marvellous ducks next are lucky. Thanks for these posts and the amazing paintings.

Ah the bluebirds!! That's amazing you can see them so well and watch a little family. Thank you for this vision, you have brightened my morning. I hope they can keep the sparrows at bay.
